Certificate Course European Competence

Whether in response to the COVID-19 and Euro crises, Brexit, the challenges of climate change, migration, or the war in Ukraine, “Europe” is more present than ever in public discourse. This makes it especially important for the younger generation to engage with the European idea: to get to know our neighbors, understand democratic decision-making, and develop a willingness to participate in the larger project of “Europe.”

Schools play a crucial role in building these skills, often providing the only and sometimes the last opportunity for many young people to engage with Europe in a qualified and structured way.

Given the complexity of this topic, addressing it cannot and should not be limited to social science classes in the upper grades. Instead, it must be incorporated into all subjects and grade levels across the curriculum.

But how can we, as teachers, integrate this crucial topic into daily school life? How can it be taught in an age-appropriate, action-oriented, and experiential way, even beyond traditional social science subjects?

The Certificate Course in European Competence provides answers, aiming to support dedicated teachers from all subjects and school types in bringing Europe into their classrooms. This course includes a four-day seminar where participants are equipped to develop and implement an independent project within a school context. Upon presenting this final project 6 to 24 months after the seminar, participants receive the Certificate of European Competence. The course, including travel expenses, is free of charge and open to all European teachers, with all sessions offered in English.

The next course will be conducted in English as an EU-funded international contact seminar from April 7 to 10, 2025. Participation, including travel expenses, is fully funded, and applications are now open (see flyer and application form below).
